Methodology

BankRanked compares FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions using publicly available federal data. We do not invent ratings or accept payment for placement. Specific data sources are cited inline on each entity page, comparison page, and guide where the claim is made.

How we rank

By default, banks and credit unions are ranked by total assets, largest first. We chose this default because:

  • Total assets is an objective, audited figure reported quarterly to federal regulators.
  • It provides a clear size comparison without subjective judgment.
  • It is not influenced by affiliate relationships.

Individual entity pages also surface profitability (ROA, ROE), deposit base, branch count, and complaint patterns so users can compare on the criteria most relevant to them.

Editorial process

Research is AI-assisted; every guide and glossary entry is reviewed by the BankRanked editorial team before publication. Data-driven pages (bank profiles, state pages, comparisons) are generated programmatically from federal data and refreshed on a fixed cadence. We update content when underlying data or methodology changes.

Update cadence

  • Bank and credit union financials: quarterly, aligned with federal call report schedules.
  • Consumer complaint data: refreshed continuously as new records are filed.
  • Interest rate benchmarks: refreshed daily for market rates, monthly for series with longer publication lags.

Complaint data context

Consumer complaint volumes generally correlate with institution size. A bank with 100 million customers will typically have more complaints than a community bank. We present complaint data for transparency, but it should be evaluated in context of the institution's size.

What this comparison does NOT cover

  • BankRanked is a comparative research tool, not a personal recommendation.
  • Federal financial data has a quarterly lag (figures may be one to three months old).
  • Complaint data represents a subset of all customer experiences.
  • We currently track the top 500 banks and 200 credit unions by assets, not every federally insured institution.
  • Individual product terms (APY, fees, eligibility) change frequently and should be verified directly with the institution before opening an account.
